1. Roger vs. Kevin: This was unavoidable. After all the fireworks on the chat boards, emails, video smack talk, I want to see this go down on the court. I have to think that if Rog gets into his streaky "on" phase, this game could be "done in 30 secs" (much like Huyen's sex life). But Kevin's consistent all around game definitely has the edge if this game drags out beyond that. Kevin will be using the bank much like NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer before a night out with an "escort". I thought about putting Alec against Rog, but I wanted to actually see B-ball being played rather than a UFC match (that's next week's blog).
My prediction: 12-10 Kevin
2. Matt vs. Ma: O.K. This is the only true big man match up we have and I think it would be fairly even unless Matt is canning the shots from the elbow and free throw line. In a head to head rebounding scenario, Ma easily gets the best of it. Unfortunately Ma then has to dribble it out to clear the ball and then reposition back into the post-up position. As we have seen thus far, Ma can catch, rebound, and shoot over anyone in the BBA - but he cant dribble and cant hit the three.
My predition: 12-6 Matt
3. Ray vs. Huyen: Combined playing age of these two? 95. Ray is older than original sin and Huyen's broken down body plays like its older than Ray's grandmother (who is actually balling in the Elder's league in Mumbai as we speak). With all the back and forth between these two over two seasons, this match should finally settle a lot of issues. Its a tough one to figure out though. On paper it looks like the younger, more hair challenged, Huyen should run away with the game. But recently in the the head-to-head match-ups its been Ray that walked off the court with both the victories and more points scored. It seems that after all the trash talk, Huyen brings out the best games in Ray. Whose shoulder will pop out first? Whose ankle will be bandaged first? Will they be able to even finish the game?
My prediction: 12-9 Huyen
4. Herb vs. Alec: Either one of these guys would have been challenges defensesively for any of the guys above and that is why they are paired with each other - no one else is dumb enough to challenge them. This is true drag-em out dish-em out type of game. Alec has the scoring edge with his twisty turvy around the basket moves and the killer three shot, but Herb is in my mind the best defensive player in the league, and Alec will get no free shots. Herb's challenge though will be to score inside against the deceptively wiry strength of the prototypical skinny asian kid.
My prediction: 12-11 Alec
5. Dan vs. Russ: I did not match these guys up based on size, but it just worked out that way. What a match up! Russ's speed and recently found high arcing jumper against the post-up driven game of Dan the Man. Any time Russ misses, it surely is a one and done (insert Huyen continuation joke here). But can Dan step out to cover Russ's quick release (more Huyen humor). Can Russ possibly stop Dan's moves around the basket? I have to think that if Dan plays smart, he wins this close game - will he have the dedication and determination to play smart though?
My prediction: 12-8 Russ!
6. Davis vs. Rob: This was not a match up of exclusion but rather one of necessity. After all, Rob carries the best overall W-L record into the 5th week of BBA5 and has had a historic turnaround in his shooting, rebounding, and is the player everyone wants on their team. That being said, Davis's shot and all around selfless play has also been improving and everyone knows he will give his best effort for the team. If Davis' shot is on, this game could be close. But given Rob's aggressive defensive all-over-your-body stance, I think Davis will have trouble finding an open jumper all day without getting a laser pass from Roger.
My prediction: 12-6 Rob
That it!! Post your predictions for each game below.
Kevin, 12-9
ReplyDeleteMa, 12-9
Huyen, 13-8 (3 pt bomb to win the game)
Alec, 12-11
Dan, 12-6
Rob, 12-4
i think better matchups would be:
klo-rog
hyn-alc
ray-hrb
mat-ma
russ-rob
dan-davis
winners would then be, klo, alc, ray, ma, rob, dan
I am not sure about the quality of your match-ups.
ReplyDelete1. Russ-Rob? That wont work at all and will look a little like Lamar Odom vs. Paul Guilfoyle (CSI actor) - Different styles and no fun to watch.
2. Alec vs. Huyen would have all the excitement of watching yeast rise - fluffy on the surface but stinky as the game continues. And there is little chance that Huyen losses that one. Without the distraction of Ray's constant jabbering and mind games, Huyen will be focussed on the rim and nothing but the rim.
3. I agree with the Dan-Davis match up.
4. Herb-Ray. Again, this has a lot of physical play and will mimic a Lamar Odom-Karl Malone style match up - but again, rather boring for the viewing public. Two sweaty guys grinding it out inside the paint - only interested viewership is in SF proper.
As for your scores? You think Ma could take Matt? No way if Matt is shooting the ball and not his mouth.
Dan Dominating Russ to that extent? Rarely do I see Dan concentrating for a whole game like that - it just wont happen.
Maybe one of these weekends, we can make these match-ups a reality?
12-6?! wow...didn't think id be the most underated player.
ReplyDeletei'd have to agree on alecs predictions more then yours haha.
haha funny.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree with pretty much all your picks, although Ma vs Matt would be a lot closer than 12-6. Matt certainly is one of the most improved players in the league (along with Alec and Robert). He just keeps getting better and better and amazes me with the consistency of his shot. But if Ma is fresh and has his energy, he make those free throw line jumpers and hook shots over anyone.
I wonder if Ma vs Davis would not be a better matchup. These guys are the true big bodies of the league. Davis loves to pound it out, and Ma's size could take the pounding.
That would leave Matt vs Rob, both long, lanky players who like to drive but sometimes have trouble finishing. But they can both hit the outside shot with consistency.
Then Dan vs Russ. Dan beat me 12-1 one on one. It's true, if he focuses, he can win. As long as he doesn't play stupid and throw up left handed running hook shots that don't even hit the rim.
I like the Huyen vs Alec matchup because they are similar. Outside shooting, along with weird, awkward looking layups. Same goes for Ray vs Herb. Strong post moves, big strong bruising bodies and good midrange games.
Klo def Rog
Huyen def Alec
Ray def Herb
Ma def Davis
Rob def Matt
Dan def Russ
ROG vs Kevin: This is a very good matchup that I think will depend on whether ROG is able to hit his three-pointers or not, since KEV won't let him drive to the whole easily. Too much consistency by KEV in this one. Kevin 12-8
ReplyDeleteMA vs MAT: The battle of the big men! RAY mentioned that MA has no handles...but have you seen the youtube clips? MAT dribbling around isn't a thing of beauty either. They both have good mid-range shots, but I think MA is too athletic underneath the basket. MA 12-9
RAY vs HYN: Honestly, I don't even think this one is close. HYN is just the overwhelming favorite. HOWEVER, RAY has torched me in all our games this season...8 points each time. But then again, this is 1v1 and I can focus entirely on him. I'll give respect to my elders...HYN 12-10
HRB vs ALC: Two evenly matched players...on paper. I think ALC has too many quick-goofy moves around the basket that will throw HRB off. Call me crazy, I don't think this is close. ALC 12-7
DAN vs RUS: This is a very intriguing matchup that I think will take FOREVER to finish. As a non-bias viewer, I say DAN 12-10. As his housemate, DAN 12-0.
DAV vs ROB: I think this is a clear mismatch with ROB taking it 12-6.
ALC vs HRB:
DAN vs RUS:
DAV vs ROB:
We should definitely have these match-ups to conclude our season. THOUGHTS?!?!?! LETS DO IT!
ReplyDeleteAs Rog would say:
ReplyDeleteI'M ALL IN!!!!
Lets do it. In order to not affect the sanctity of the three-on-three games, we could end each session with 2 one-on-on match ups. I volunteer Huyen-Ray and Ma- Matt as the first two this weekend! We would keep W-L stats in a separte category, and at the end of the season crown a 1-0-1 champ as well!!
Lol, yea it'd be interesting to see who wins.
ReplyDeleteWe had a predecessor to BBA, call it BBA0 if you will: http://geocities.com/hawk00eyed/halo.html
Roger went 0-11 against Herbert... Where is this Herbert of old??
Branching off of the idea of a game after 3 on 3 games, what about a 5 on 5 game after the end of each week? We have at least 4 week left to our BBA5 season, we could have a Best of 5 series. With 12 people, we could have 6 people per team and substitute in when necessary. No stats, just straight up first team to win 3 games.
Possible teams:
- KLO, ALC, HRB, DAN, MAT, RUS
vs
- ROG, HYN, RAY, ROB, MA, DAV
ROG and HYN = The Two Deadliest and Streakiest(sp?) shooters from downtown?
ReplyDeleteRAY = The unstoppable midrange and fadeaway J?
ROB = The leagues most improved player?
MA = The best interior defender?
DAV = The unmovable force inside?
Honestly...in a best of 5 games, our team wins in 3 games. EASILY.
Also I challenge ALC to a game of NBA 2k9 in which I'll use the crappiest team they have just to make it even. Playing that game for only the second time ever on the xbox360 and beating him by 35+ points left me very unsatisfied.
